Addiction / Substance Use Counseling in Greenwood Village, CO

Are You Concerned About Your Substance Use?

  • Are you questioning your relationship with substances?

  • Do you use alcohol and/or other drugs to cope with stress or tough emotions?

  • Are you sober—or sober-curious—and looking for support and reinforcement on your journey?

Everyone has a unique relationship with substances. Often, this relationship changes with age and life transitions, especially when stress compromises the ability to cope.

But sometimes it’s just a matter of an inability to tolerate substances the way you used to, causing you to feel physically bad and less functional. If substance use is impacting your performance, routine, or relationships, it makes sense that you’re seeking support.

Whatever it is bringing you to therapy, my approach to counseling for substance use and addiction centers your experience. Whether you’re newly on the path to moderation or recovery, or you’ve been struggling with your use for a while, we can work together to find new, consistent, and effective ways of coping.

On The Path To Recovery, You Are Not Alone

We receive a lot of confusing messages about substance use. On the one hand, our culture normalizes drinking, and alcohol is present at virtually every social engagement and celebration. Yet, on the other hand, there’s also a lot of shame wrapped up in substance use. While we may have a relationship with substances that starts out with a sense of moderation and control, stressors can quickly enter the picture and soon, our use can escalate without us even realizing it.

There are so many influences contributing to substance use and addiction, including genetics, environmental factors, and life circumstances. With all of those underlying causes at play, it can be challenging to identify the source of the problem—and determine the best course of action to address overcome challenges related to substance use and addiction.

My therapeutic approach is nonjudgmental and centered on what you want to get out of this process. I will meet you where you are on your journey, offering you skills for bolstering your self-compassion and resilience so that you can have the relationship with substances you want.

Whether you’re seeking moderation or sobriety, counseling is individualized to your unique challenges with substance use, abuse, or addiction. As a clinician with years of training and experience in this field, I offer a skilled, mindfully focused therapeutic approach that prioritizes achievable goals and harm reduction.

Alongside psychoeducation around substance use and addiction, a significant aspect of how I work includes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Collaborating with you to determine long-term goals, we will nurture healthy coping and an ability to better tolerate stress, discomfort, and cravings. By increasing your mindfulness, you can feel more flexible and empowered in the choices you make.

I also use Motivational Interviewing—a gold standard for treatment—which can help you understand your internal motivations for change when it comes to your relationship with substance use or addiction. As you gain a stronger idea of the choices you do have, you can make decisions that meaningfully align with your values.

No matter what you bring to counseling, there are many ways we can go about navigating your substance abuse or addiction. Change can be scary, but it’s the next step in creating the future you want. I will support you through this work, and together, we will establish a new relationship with substances that brings you a sense of peace, balance, and hope.

Common FAQs About Therapy…

  • It’s common for clients to worry about feeling ashamed or judged in treatment, and I understand if you’re hesitant about coming back after a negative experience with a substance abuse counselor.

While I have a lot of experience working in this field, I do not take a one-size-fits-all approach to counseling for substance abuse and addiction. Instead, I will meet you wherever you are and tailor the process to your specific goals, whether they involve seeking moderation, sobriety, or just a deeper understanding of your use.

Shame is not part of my practice approach; instead, I rely on therapy techniques that bolster empowerment and self-compassion.

  • Harm reduction is all about figuring out what makes the most sense for your life. In this process, we create goals together and adjust along the way so that you can take meaningful, actionable steps in the direction of healing and progress.

You don’t need to come to therapy with these goals in mind already. And whether it’s decided that sobriety or moderation is the path, I will support you in reaching your goals.

  • I am passionate about helping clients improve their relationships with themselves through improving their relationships with substances. In addition to years of direct experience working with this population, I have a certification-in-training for substance abuse disorder with a continued dedication to ongoing training and education.

  • Because this process is tailored to each client’s unique needs, I will defer to what you want to do in terms of group support or a 12-step program. These treatment interventions are not part of my practice, but I am happy to help reinforce program concepts as part of your long-term goals for therapy if you participate.
